Technology overview


Bicowhite® is a combination of 5 different whitening active ingredients.  It is based on the Bicosome® technology platform to provide double encapsulation of the actives and target delivery to the skin layers where each ingredient is most effective.  The 5 whitening ingredients each play a different role in the  de-pigmentation processes and preventing the formation of dark spots.  It targets synthesis and transfer of melanin, stimulates cell renewal and blocks oxidative stress and inflammation to prevent melanin oxidation.

5. Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate: Melanin synthesis

Bicowhite® prevents the increase of melanin in skin upon UV exposure and it even reduces it below initial values. This is demonstrated by melanin content variation measurements in skin explants upon daily UV exposure after 5 and 10 days.

In-vivo studies in 20 Caucasian females demonstrate the high level of specificity of Bicowhite® in targeting hyper-pigmented areas. After 56 days of treatment with a 3% Bicowhite® formulation, the melanin index of dark spots versus that of the adjacent area (expressed as ∆M) decreased significantly. ∆M decreased by 26% for the whole population, whereas the best performing group reached a decrease of 33%.

Skin brightness and whiteness (expressed by L* and I.T.A.˚, respectively) are greatly improved for hyper-pigmented areas, while non-pigmented areas remain highly unaffected. After 56 days of 3% Bicowhite treatment, I.T.A.˚ increased by 21% in the hyper-pigmented areas, compared to 8% in the non-pigmented areas. The L* value increased by 2.5% in the hyper-pigmented area whereas the non-pigmented area showed a minimal increase of 0.6%.

Clinical dermatologist evaluations after 28 and 58 days of a 3% Bicowhite treatment show a clear improvement in spot color intensity. Overall skin uniformity is also greatly improved over the same application periods.

Formulation guidelines


Liquid water-based Bicowhite®:

  • Post-add Bicowhite® to the O/W emulsion upon cooling down
  • Recommended dosage: 1 - 3%
  • Optimum pH range: 4 – 8
  • Preferred processing temperature: <50˚C


Dos and Don’ts:

  • Do not dissolve Bicowhite® in any solvents
  • Avoid harsh surfactants
  • Do not use in formulations with alcohol content of >15%
  • Avoid strong oxidants, such as peroxide

Bicowhite®  is globally compliant (including China) for use as cosmetic ingredient
