This effect of Bicosome® FS  is visualized in cryo-SEM studies on skin teated with Bicosome® FS. The smart disc bilayer structures are visible while  being anchored in the inter-cellular spaces of the Stratum Corneum.

Bicosome® FS improves  barrier function and biomechanical properties of skin during use.  However, due  to the intrinsic repair of of the skin's lipid structure it also has an ongoing and prolonged effect that continues for at least 7 days after application has stopped.

In-vivo clinical studies on 20 volunteers show that barrier function, as measured by water loss, is improved by 25% 7 days after finishing a 7-day application regimen compared to non-treated skin.  Skin elasticity and firmness also continue to improve as well.

Bicosome® FS also helps repair damages to the skin barrier after it has been disrupted by chemical aggression (e.g. as exposure to salicylic acid, sodium lauryl sulphate, etc.).

In the same clinical study on 20 volunteers skin was exposued for 2 hours to sodium lauryl sulphate after which a 7-day application regimen was started with Bicosome® FS (1 daily application). barrier function, as measured by water loss, is restored much quicker due to Bicosome® FS (4  versus 7 days) and Firmness and elasticity are fully restored after 2 daily applications.

Formulation guidelines

 

Liquid water-based Bicosome® FS:

  • Post-add Bicosome® FS to the O/W emulsion upon cooling down
  • Recommended dosage: 1 - 3%
  • Optimum pH range: 3 – 9
  • Preferred processing temperature: <55˚C

 

Lyophilized Bicosome® FS:

  • Post-add Bicosome® FS to the W/O emulsion upon cooling down
  • Recommended dosage: 0.2 - 0.6%
  • Optimum pH range: 3 – 9
  • Preferred processing temperature: <55˚C

 

Dos and Don’ts:

  • Do not dissolve Bicosome® FS in any solvent
  • Avoid harsh surfactants
  • Do not use in formulations with alcohol content of >15%
  • Avoid strong oxidants, such as peroxide

Technology overview

 

Bicosome® FS is a 99% natural ingredient based on the Bicosome® skin delivery platform. The Bicosome®  platform is focused around lipid bilayer structures that are called smart discs. The smart discs in Bicosome® FS are designed to penetrate into the intermediate layers of the Stratum Corneum.

Once these intermediate layers are reached, the lipid structures of the smart discs replenish, rebuild and reinforce the skin's natural lipid matrix. In this way Bicosome® FS performs a similar role and mimics the biological activity of basal epidermal layers that replenish lipids via lamelar bodies.

SAXS (Small Angle X-ray Scattering) of native and Bicosome® FS treated skin samples show a higher degree of organization of lipid structures which relates to a stronger barrier function. This is indicated in the SAXS spectrum by the increase in number and sharpening of peaks after Bicosome® FS treatment.
